Wilbert Smith has been riding since 1986 and
moved to Las Vegas in 1998 from North
Dakota to escape the harsh winters and work
as a stagehand (which he has done since
1990).  He has not owned any transportation
other than a motorcycle since approximately
1999 and attends as many motorcycle
functions as his schedule permits.
Vintage Bike Night

A popular convenience store in Arizona is reaching out
for help after a fire devastated their business. Rosie's
Den is a restaurant and bar that many people stopped at
on the way to Arizona, as well as one of the closest
places for Nevadans to buy lottery tickets. The business
was almost entirely destroyed by a fire and was not
covered by fire insurance. The owners say that loyal
supporters have been extremely supportive and helpful
already. "We've had overwhelming support and can't
thank everyone enough," said Brad Larsen, one of
Rosie's children. "We will rise out of this, but we are
tapped out of resources and need more help."The
owners are hoping for donations to help them rebuild
within the next three to six months. They set up a fund
that they are calling the "Rosie's Den Fire Fund." The
information for the fund is below. They say every little
bit of help counts.

Here is the story and the photos from the Vintage Bike Night Friday.  The benefit
this morning ended up being false information.  I showed up, and there was no
sign of anyone, but they were doing a barbecue and bike wash.  The guy who
was doing the grilling said he had been there since 10:20 or so and there was no
sign of any groups there for any kind of event.  I will most likely have to send the
photos in a couple of e-mails, feel free to use those you feel are best suited.

On Friday, August 19 starting at about 7 pm Steve MacAnulty of Las Vegas
Dynotech and his wife Tara hosted their third monthly installment of their
Vintage Bike Night in conjunction with The Arts Factory.  It featured body
painting by Arts Factory resident artists Alexander Phuerta of peaceNart Studio
as well as "Mr. Gums."

This month their were a lot more newer bikes, but their were a lot more bikes,
period, and there wasn't a neon light or drop of excessive chrome to be seen
anywhere.  If you wanted to see vintage bikes, there was a little bit of everything,
and if you didn't see something you liked you weren't looking hard enough.
There was everything from a 70's or 80's Japanese enduro, to a late 60's (I
believe) mint single cylinder bevel drive Ducati, to a return of the original,
unrestored 1934 Indian Chief that was also featured in the feature here last month.

There were a couple of local bands playing, including The Quitters, and of
course the body painting.  Alexander Phuerta, who was also there last month
(along with his "canvas" Brynn Gardino) was joined by "Mr. Gums" and his
subject Yasmine.  Later in the evening after the crowd had thinned considerably,
a woman from the crowd, Nautica, who I am told is a performer in some
capacity at Binions, came up, asked to be painted, then removed her top for "Mr.
Gums" to do his work.

Also, I was told a little more information about the fellow on the chief that has
been the star of the show.  Turns out his name is Phil, and he lives in the area.
He heard about the first vintage bike night, and cleaned out the tank, rode it to the
gas station, put a dollars worth of gas in the tank, and started it and rode it for the
first time in eight years.  He has ridden it to every Vintage Bike Night so far,
arriving in a cloud of smoke in a Hawaiian shirt.  When leaving he had trouble
getting the bike to start (turns out he had cleaned the carb, but made a couple of
small errors.)  Fortunately, Kevin May, an Indian enthusiast (that is actually a
major understatement, from what I have seen and heard, if there is something to
be known about an old Indian, he knows it.  He currently has a 46 Cheif that he
rides daily and a 34 Cheif that he is working on getting back on the road)  lent a
hand.  He had left his tools at home, but was able to find someone else with tools
(nice thing about being at a vintage bike night is that chances are very good that
someone has tools.)  They worked together and pulled the carb apart and cleared
a fuel line to the float.  A couple of primer kicks and one good solid kick later he
was back up and running.

All in all, Steve, Tara, and the Arts Factory are putting on a great monthly event
free of drama and people out only to be seen and not to ride and enjoy others
work.  It takes place on the third Friday of every month.  In September that falls
on the 16th.  Hope to see some of you there.  It's a great event that is all about
classic bikes of all types
